Cynthia Sass spoke on Hiring and Terminating Employees in the Current Economy and Privacy and Today’s Technology in the Workplace at the Essentials of Employment Law Seminar presented by Sterling Education Services, in Tampa on January 13, 2016.  The topics were specific to the State of Florida.

The presentation on Hiring and Terminating Employees in the Current Economy, covered topics like when hiring qualified employees, what you can and can’t ask at the interview, what are the rules regarding criminal background information, how to keep credit checks in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act, as well as when handling terminations and layoffs, the legal considerations to take into account, structuring severance and separation packages and related benefits, and strategies for avoiding claims.   For the section on Privacy and Today’s Technology in the Workplace, Ms. Sass discussed balancing an employer’s right to know versus employee’s privacy, monitoring and creating policies regarding wireless devices, electronic communications and data security, use of social networking sites in the employment context, and off-the-job behavior like blogging and dating.
